Desolation Wilderness, October 18-22, 2013

We have been extremely busy dealing with the remodel of our home so I have not been able to maintain this blog.  I had a few minutes to post some highlights of my last backpacking trip of 2013.  Enjoy.  Click on the links in the captions for very HD images.

I went back up to Desolation Wilderness and camped 4 nights at Dick's Lake.  This gave me an opportunity to do some off-trail hiking and exploring.

I'll post some more details about this trip later especially relating to the "issues" about my decent from the saddle near Dick's Peak.

The photo below was the first direct evidence that Winter is on the way.  It had snowed two weeks earlier and the snow had not melted.  I had just climbed out of the Tahoe basin when I took this photo.

This stunted little tree is living at the top of this mountain over 9,200 ft elevation!  HD image is here.
It is interesting that above 9,000 ft there is no exposed granite.  All  the rock here is metamorphic (compressed ancient sea bed).  Geologists say erosion/glacial action have eroded the metamorphic rock at lower elevations leaving the granite Sierra Nevada Batholith exposed.

Not sure which photo I like better.  HD image here.

I like how this chunk of granite fell out of the boulder...on its way to becoming sand.  HD image here.

God painted this for me.  No one else was at the lake and I was so lucky to capture it.  There is more to this picture I'll share later.  HD image here.
