John Muir Trail Information

This Yahoo Group is fantastic.  Opinions expressed in the group are personal so you always need to use your own judgement in what gear you select, what routes you choose and what risks you take.  Links are searchable.

And of course the John Muir Trail Facebook Group.  People are crazy.

New NPS policy to limit traditional JMT hikes.

Apparently too many "in park" hikers were not able to obtain wilderness permits due to JMT hikers using up the trail head quotas.  The NPS has now established an exit quota for leaving the Yosemite Park via Donohue Pass.  See this link:

Acclimatization and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

If you are hiking in elevations in excess of 8,000 ft I'd recommend you read this:

Which points to this:

I also found this information applicable to pre-hike acclimatization on page 10 in the document below:

http://www.usariem.army.mil/assets/docs/publications/articles/2004/altitudeacclimatizationguide.pdf

As I understand it, if you can acclimate to at least 9,000 ft for a few days (say in Desolation Wilderness), that acclimatization will hold for about 5-7 days.

John Muir Trail: The Essential Guide to Hiking America's Most Famous Trail by Elizabeth Wenk.  If you buy this book, you can also download the version that is for a NOBO (north bound) trek.  See this link:

Still making up my mind on this one.

For Women only:  Ladies of the JMT Facebook Group

This facebook group deals with women's issues on the trails.  Maybe this is a privacy thing for women to ask tough questions?
